What the GTA 6 trailers actually confirm (and what they don't)
An evidence recap of every official GTA 6 reveal — Trailers 1 and 2, the 27 August Extended Look and the 15 October Launch Trailer: the setting, the protagonists, the map scale, and the locations we can actually place.
The official reveals are our single most reliable public source, because they come straight from Rockstar. But even official footage needs reading carefully — a location shown on screen is confirmed to exist; its exact map position is often an inference. Here’s the clean split, now updated for the final pre-launch trailer.
New: the Launch Trailer (updated 18 Oct)
On 15 October 2026, Rockstar released the Grand Theft Auto VI Launch Trailer — 89 seconds (we measured it from Rockstar’s own master), captured on PS5, set to a new Justice single, “Flower in a Hurricane”. It’s a story trailer rather than a tour: lots of Jason and Lucia, very few readable place names. What it confirms:
- 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, again — on the end card and in Rockstar’s Newswire post, alongside an ESRB M rating badge.
- The Keys — the trailer opens on a “Welcome to The Keys” roadside sign and a marina signed “Brian’s Marina”.
- One genuinely new name on a highway sign: Shoreline Amphitheater. A directional sign proves a name exists, not where the venue is, so it’s in our verification queue rather than on the map.
The full, frame-checked list is in our Launch Trailer breakdown.
The Extended Look (updated 30 Aug)
On 27 August 2026, Rockstar released “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” — 26 minutes 48 seconds of footage (we measured it from Rockstar’s own master; most outlets round up to 26:49), captured entirely in-game on a base PS5, premiered on Netflix at 3pm ET and free on Rockstar’s channels six hours later. It’s the closest thing to gameplay Rockstar has ever shown pre-launch, and it moved several claims up our confidence scale:
- Map scale is now first-party fact: Rockstar’s own figures, given to press, put the map at ~3× Red Dead Redemption 2’s playable area, with Vice City ~2× Los Santos. Until August, we listed scale comparisons as unconfirmed — that changed, and the tracker changed with it.
- New named locations appeared on screen or in dialogue — a rooftop bar called Effluvia, the Megamundo media headquarters, and the Bayside neighborhood among them. Each is being added to the Leonida Map with its evidence attached.
- Systems shown: store robberies with a witness system, safehouses, a six-star wanted system, and a broad spread of activities — which tells us what kinds of locations will matter on the map.
Confirmed by the trailers
- The setting is the state of Leonida, a fictional Florida, with a modern Vice City as its centrepiece. Both are shown directly.
- Two protagonists, Jason and Lucia. Named and shown; their relationship is the story’s spine.
- Lucia is the series’ first female lead — a first-party, series-first detail.
- A run of recognisable location types: the beach strip, the Everglades-style wetlands, a Keys-style island chain, and dense urban blocks.
Each of these is stamped Confirmed on our tracker.
Confirmed to exist, but not precisely placed
This is the subtle part. When official footage shows a strip club, a diner, or a stretch of coastline, we know it exists — but pinning it to a coordinate on the map is interpretation. On the Leonida Map, those points carry a confidence label that reflects exactly that: the place is real, the position is our best reconstruction, and we say so.
What official material still does not confirm
- Mission structure beyond what was shown, online plans, or story details.
- Most specific businesses, radio stations, or characters beyond what’s named on screen or in Rockstar’s own copy.
A note on leaks
August also brought a widely-reported unauthorized leak campaign. Our policy is simple and non-negotiable: we report that leaks happened — Rockstar itself called them “heartbreaking for our team” — but nothing leak-derived is used as evidence here, at any confidence level, ever. If you see a “full map leak” claiming pixel-perfect placement of dozens of interiors, weigh it against this: even Rockstar’s own footage only confirms existence, not coordinates. That gap is where most misinformation lives — and it’s the gap our confidence labels exist to close honestly.
